Three ways into the arena, and the rules that apply to all of them
Single ticket with audio guide. The booking above gives you a timed entry to the Colosseum, access to the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill and an audio guide in an app. It is the cheapest route if the Colosseum is your only goal, and it needs nothing more than an ID, a charged phone and headphones.
Guided tour with entry. A licensed guide takes you through the amphitheatre in a small group. Worth it if you want the stories behind the stands, the hypogeum and the games rather than a map, and it settles the time slot for you.
Colosseum with the arena floor. The arena option enters the Colosseum through the gladiators' gate onto the reconstructed floor, the view the fighters had. It is the option for a second visit or for anyone who wants more than the stands.
Timed entry is compulsory
The Colosseum admits visitors in time slots only, ticket or pass, and every ticket carries a name, so bring an ID. Tickets go on sale 30 days ahead and the best slots in high season are gone early. Once your slot has passed, the ticket is void. Early mornings and the last two hours before closing are the calmer times.
What the gate charges
The regular adult price at the official Colosseum ticket office is EUR 18 for the 24-hour ticket, one timed entry to the Colosseum plus the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill, and EUR 24 for the Full Experience with the arena floor or the underground, valid for two days (checked September 2026). Visitors under 18 enter free but need a free ticket with a slot, EU citizens aged 18 to 25 pay a token fee. Ticket resellers add a service fee and an audio guide or a tour on top, which is why the ticket above costs more than the gate price.
Or a pass after all?
If you also want the Vatican Museums and the Pantheon, the Essentials Pass bundles the three with the slots reserved for you; for two or more days with the bus, the boat and Castel Sant'Angelo, the City Pass is the broader package. If you mostly need transport, the city's Roma Pass covers the Colosseum as one of its free entries, with the slot booked by you. The comparison shows the full picture.
