Buying and using
How the Explorer Pass works
Pick a number, not a date. The clock starts with your first visit.
- 1
Choose the number
Decide how many attractions you want, from two to seven. You do not have to name them when you buy, only how many. - 2
Activate in the app
The pass lives in the Go City app. The 30-day window opens with the first attraction you visit, not with the purchase. - 3
Reserve the big three
The Colosseum, the Vatican Museums and the Borghese Gallery need a time slot, booked after activation through the Go City concierge or the provider. Book them early, especially in high season.
Weighing it up
What speaks against the Explorer Pass, and who it is for
Against it: the savings the issuer shows are measured against provider prices that include an audio guide or a tour, not against the official gate prices of the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums, so the real saving is smaller than the catalogue suggests. Public transport is not part of the pass and cannot be added, the Big Bus uses up one of your picks, and a large part of the 36 choices are cooking classes, bike tours, tastings and aperitifs. The climb to the dome of St Peter's is not on the list, only a reserved entry to the basilica with an audio guide.
For whom: travellers with a short list who do not want to commit to consecutive days: a long weekend with the Colosseum and the Vatican on separate days, or a longer stay with a tour or two in between. The pass can be refunded in full within 90 days of purchase as long as it has not been activated, which no other Rome pass offers.
Alternatives: if you want the Colosseum and the Vatican with the reservations done for you, the Essentials Pass settles both at booking; for the bus without spending a pick, the City Pass includes 48 hours of it. All six in the comparison.
FAQ
Questions about the Explorer Pass
Short answers for this pass, everything else on the FAQ page.
Do I have to name my attractions when I buy?+
No. You buy a number of picks, from two to seven, and decide in the app which of the 36 attractions you use. The Colosseum, the Vatican Museums and the Borghese Gallery need a reserved time slot before you go.
Can I use the picks on different days?+
Yes. There is no run of consecutive days. Every pick can be used on any day within 30 days of your first visit.
Can I cancel the pass?+
Yes, within 90 days of purchase and as long as the pass has not been activated. Once you have used the first attraction, no refund. The issuer also promises to refund the difference if the pass saves less than the single prices of your visits.
